Major players in classical music have been invited to adjudicate Hotel Conrinthia’s 2015 Artist in Residence programme.

Award-winning tenor Joseph Calleja, chief executive of the Royal Opera House Alex Beard and managing director of the Barbican, Sir Nicholas Kenyon are among a distinguished panel of ten judges who have been asked to oversee the submissions of artists put forward in this year’s opera-themed residency. The panel also includes artistic director of Birmingham Opera Company Graham Vick and the manager of the Corinthia, Renaud Gregoire.

The Corinthia’s artist in residence programme this year offers support and experience to opera singers showing promise early in their careers. It aims to encourage them to explore both conventional and unconventional interpretations in opera, creating a project that responds to the life of the hotel while standing out for originality and imagination.

‘Delighted’ to have been asked to join the judging panel, Joseph Calleja says, ‘I am very excited to be involved in such a creative venture. The Corinthia’s Artist in Residence programme is a great way to nurture emerging opera talent. The nature of this enterprise means that it also has the potential to address preconceptions and reach new audiences. It’s a wonderful opportunity and I can’t wait to see what ideas they come up with.’

Artists have already been asked to work on ideas for the residency and the judges will choose the winning project on 30 April 2015. The winner of the programme will take up residence in the hotel for two to four weeks in the summer, with the final performance presented to audiences in September 2015.

Currently in its fourth year, the hotel’s artist in residence aims to discover and champion British talent in the arts and has previously given exposure to aspiring filmmakers, theatre companies and visual artists.

A final ‘wild card’ position remains unfilled. Visit corinthia-air.com/opera to find out more.
