Peter Oundjian is to take over the helm of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO) in 2012.

The British-Canadian conductor and violinist currently conducts the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, a post he will keep on in tandem with the new Glasgow role. Initially on board for a four-year period, Oundjian will take over from the popular French conductor Stéphane Denève, who has been music director since 2005.

Oundjian, although born in Toronto, was brought up in London. He attended the Royal College of Music before moving to America to pursue his studies at the Julliard School of Music, New York.

As a member of the Tokyo String Quartet, Oundjian's career spanned 14 years. On leaving the ensemble, he embarked on a conducting career which has seen him hold positions as principal guest conductor of the Detroit Symphony and Colorado Symphony Orchestras.

'I have been fortunate to conduct the Toronto Symphony on many occasions and I have seen the great creativity, imagination and dedication that Peter has brought to them,' says Denève. 'I am sure that he will bring that same commitment and passion to the RSNO.'
