Sakari Oramo has renewed his contract as Chief Conductor and Artistic Advisor with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra until June 2020. The news was announced at the orchestra’s 2016/17 season launch at the Stockholm Concert Hall.

Since being appointed to the post in 2008, the Finnish conductor has led the orchestra to a number of successes, including a sold-out performance at the 2011 BBC Proms, a critically acclaimed European tour, and a BBC Music Magazine Award for their recording of Nielsen’s Symphonies No.1 & 3 on the BIS label.

"I am delighted to be renewing my contract as Chief Conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra into the next decade,” says Oramo. "I am hugely looking forward to many exciting projects both in Sweden and further afield, as well as continuing our award-winning recording activities. Both musically and on a personal level, working with the wonderful orchestra and team in Stockholm is a huge privilege."

The next season will see the orchestra perform the world premiere of Anders Hillborg’s second violin concerto with soloist Lisa Batiashvili in Stockholm, alongside Strauss’s Ein Heldenleben, Bruckner’s Symphony No. 5 and Varese’s Ameriques.
