Conductor Valery Gergiev will be raising the baton for a performance of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake this summer at St Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre.
The ballet, which was premiered in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, tells the story of a princess, Odette, who is turned into a swan by an evil sorcerer. The work was first performed at the Mariinsky Theatre in 1895.
This is the first time the ballet has been broadcast live in 3D. The production will be filmed by James Cameron and Vince Pace using the technology behind 3D films like Cameron's Avatar and Ang Lee's Life of Pi.
The production features the Mariinsky Theatre’s principal ballerina Ekaterina Kondaurova as Odette and the ballet’s film director will be Ross MacGibbon, a British former Royal Ballet dancer who has performed with ballet legend Rudolf Nureyev.
The performance will take place on 6 June and screenings will take place around the world. To find out more about the event visit the Mariinsky Theatre website.
