COMPOSERS: Bach
LABELS: Sony Seon
WORKS: English Suite in A, BWV 806; English Suite in A minor, BWV 807; English Suite in G minor, BWV 808; English Suite in F, BWV 809; English Suite in E minor, BWV 810; English Suite in D minor, BWV 811
PERFORMER: Gustav Leonhardt (harpsichord)
CATALOGUE NO: S2BK 62949 ADD 1974
These benchmark accounts of the English Suites, recorded in 1973, have been out of the catalogue for far too long, and while Leonhardt recorded them again only ten years later (for Virgin), these performances can hardly be bettered. This disc should firmly rebut those who think Leonhardt’s playing lacks warmth, vitality and charisma. He demonstrates here a firm rhythmic basis, subtle articulation, sensitive application of ornamentation and notes inégales, infectious gaiety in the fast dances and beautifully poised slow movements – all delivered with the dignity of a skilled orator.
