Beethoven: Violin Concerto; Romance in F

Oscar Shumsky’s performance of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, with Andrew Davis and The Philharmonia, was warmly received when it first appeared in 1988. For some, however, his old-fashioned approach might seem a little affected. Orchestra and soloist work well together, although Shumsky is a little too close and, to my taste, the general ambience is rather too strident. These reservations are less apparent in the Second Romance which completes the disc. Nicholas Rast
