Brahms: Horn Trio in E flat, Op. 40; Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114

Brahms: Horn Trio in E flat, Op. 40; Clarinet Trio in A minor, Op. 114

A worthy mid-price reissue from Erato, combining the Horn and Clarinet Trios of Brahms. Pianist Michel Dalberto is superb throughout; the Gallic, occasionally woolly timbre of horn-player Pierre Del Vescovo is not wholly appropriate to Brahms, perhaps, though violinist Pierre Amoyal plays gloriously in this trio. The Clarinet Trio receives a suitably dark-toned, urgently debated reading from Dalberto, Lodéon and Portal. Their serenely autumnal performance, full of insight and incident, completes a thoroughly serviceable release.

The reprocessed analogue masters emerge prim and splendidly transparent; balance, perhaps inevitably in these works, still tends to favour the piano. Distinguished performances, nonetheless, and strongly recommended. Michael Jameson
