Brahms: Cello Sonata No. 1; Cello Sonata No. 2

Brahms: Cello Sonata No. 1; Cello Sonata No. 2

The E minor Sonata (1865) stresses the cello’s darker, more introspective characteristics. Yo-Yo Ma and Emanuel Ax succeed in conveying the feeling of far away and long ago in the broad, lyrical first movement. There is also plenty of verve and attack in the more heroic and passionate F major Sonata. A pleasing reissue that just misses the sublimity of the Rostropovich/Serkin DG recording. Ian Lace
