The great Chilean pianist, Claudio Arrau, died in 1991. This compilation gathers together performances recorded between 1963 and 1989 of works by Liszt, Chopin, Brahms, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Debussy admirably showing Arrau’s range of expression, from the grand to the intimate. Buy this disc simply for Schumann’s magical Vogel als Prophet, but try to ignore the differences of balance between the tracks. Annette Moreau
