COMPOSERS: Corelli
LABELS: Virgin Veritas
WORKS: Sonatas for violin and cello or harpsichord, Op. 5
PERFORMER: Trio SonnerieNigel North (archlute, theorbo, guitar)
CATALOGUE NO: VCD 5 45078 2 DDD (1990)
Corelli’s magnificent set of solo sonatas, published in 1700, is played with graceful mastery by Trio Sonnerie and Nigel North. The spotlight falls on violinist Monica Huggett, the featured soloist; she’s soulful in the slow movements, zestful in the fast, breathtakingly fleet in the elaborate ornamentation. I doubt even the ‘eyeball-rolling’ Corelli could top her bravura. Continuo support is sensitive and discreetly varied (organ, archlute, theorbo; Baroque guitar on the Follia Variations). An excellent release. Graham Lock
