Corelli: Concerti grossi, Op. 6/1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 11

Corelli: Concerti grossi, Op. 6/1, 3, 7, 8, 9, 11

Charles Burney’s 1789 comment that ‘The Concertos of Corelli seem to have withstood all the attacks of time and fashion’ still holds true 200 years later. These inventive pieces continue to delight the ear and Tafelmusik’s 1988 recording is among the best, their spirited playing balanced by a darker-hued solemnity (they play here at the lower ‘Roman pitch’). The ‘Christmas Concerto’, with its celebrated pastoral finale, is included, but it’s a shame DHM has not reissued all 12 Op. 6 concertos. Graham Lock
