Couperin: Messe pour les paroisses; Messe pour les couvents

Often one is given only the organ music of these two youthful Masses on disc, but to hear it in its true context, as here, is a far more satisfying experience. The short threads of plainsong melody, sung here with beauty and simplicity, are woven around the organ pieces with great sensitivity. Peter Hurford, playing on a finely restored 17th-century French organ, responds to the sung text with playing of delightful character and finesse. Stephen Haylett
