Elgar: Enigma Variations, Pomp and Circumstance Marches; Crown of India Suite

Elgar: Enigma Variations, Pomp and Circumstance Marches; Crown of India Suite

Excellent value and an interesting range of repertoire. In the Enigma Barenboim’s phrasing of the theme is self-indulgent, but the ensuing performance is vivid and compelling. The Marches have fast tempi and the sound lacks depth; only in No. 4 is the transition to the noble trio tune really convincing. The Crown of India, vintage Elgar which should be better known, is performed with panache and sensitivity. Terry Barfoot
