The selection from Grieg’s incidental music to Ibsen’s play comprises 12 items – more than the two popular suites combined, but a good deal less than the 23 numbers published in the full score. Edo de Waart’s spry conducting draws excellent playing from the San Francisco orchestra, while Elly Ameling’s light-voiced singing could scarcely be bettered. Grieg’s rarely performed post-Brahmsian variations (originally written for two pianos) are rather inconsequential, but they’re delightfully scored and expertly played. George Hall
