COMPOSERS: Liszt
LABELS: Erato
WORKS: Piano Concerto No. 1; Piano Concerto No. 2; Fantasia on Hungarian Folk Themes
PERFORMER: François-René Duchable (piano); LPO/James Conlon
CATALOGUE NO: 4509-92406-2 DDD (1984)
Perhaps not as characterful or bold in the concertos as a Richter or Arrau, Duchable is nevertheless a rigorous and sympathetic interpreter of Liszt. Each section is clearly defined and integrated, so that Duchable avoids that sense of formlessness which, in less sure hands, can sink these pieces. In the Fantasia, he demonstrates the more feverish brilliance of Lisztian pianism. Scrupulous back-up from Conlon and the LPO. William Humphreys-Jones
