COMPOSERS: Moeran
LABELS: Chandos Enchant
WORKS: Violin Concerto; Cello Concerto; Lonely Waters; Whythorne’s Shadow
PERFORMER: Lydia Mordkovitch (violin), Raphael Wallfisch (cello); Ulster Orchestra/ Vernon Handley, Bournemouth Sinfonietta/Norman Del Mar
CATALOGUE NO: CHAN 7078
The two conductors coax performances of fluidity and sensitivity from their orchestras and soloists, who are passionately involved: Mordkovitch so much so that she occasionally pushes too hard, and her tone and tuning suffer. The concertos contain beautiful passages – the slow movement of the Cello Concerto is especially affecting – but Moeran’s alternation of rhapsodising and a sort of cod Irish folksiness can become rather trying. More effective are the two orchestral miniatures where the material is stronger and doesn’t outstay its welcome. Martin Cotton
