COMPOSERS: Mozart
LABELS: Chandos
WORKS: Serenade in B flat K361; Divertimento in F K213
PERFORMER: Scottish National Orchestra Wind Ensemble/Paavo Järvi
CATALOGUE NO: CHAN 6575 DDD (1987)
This is a warm and characterful account of Mozart’s masterpiece for large wind band. Paavo Järvi (son of Neeme) keeps things moving nicely, pointing up the rhythmic variety of the music and securing some lovely playing from the SNO soloists – the odd, minor untidiness in ensemble adding to the sense of spontaneity. The recording is very pleasing: the slightly recessed sound suits the scale of the forces involved but allows the colours and textures to come through with clarity. An attractive filler, too.
