For anyone who loves the spirit of Paris in the Twenties, this collection of lesser-known Satie and Milhaud will be a treat indeed. Apart from the inevitable Gymnopédies (I wait in diminishing hope for a Satie disc which omits them), the pieces are all dance-inspired and tread the enticing line between affectionate portrayal and more rueful parody. Music hall and café music feature prominently, but it is Milhaud’s colourful and regrettably under-performed Saudades do Brasil, displaying his self-professed affinity with Latin America, which provides the highlight of an enjoyable and marvellously performed disc.
