The symphony’s opening Moderato con anima is positively somnambulistic, although the Andantino does wake up slowly and the last two movements actually sparkle. Russlan is taken at a real lick, and the players cope brilliantly, but the Montagues and Capulets are disappointingly temperate and the lovers seem in need of an aphrodisiac.
