Telemann: Trios and Quartets from Tafelmusik

Telemann’s Tafelmusik is one of the great masterworks of the Baroque era. The three trios and three quartets on this 1989 recording (one pair from each of the work’s three parts) reveal not only Telemann’s mastery of prevailing Italian, French and German styles but also his ability to mix them in unexpected and delightful ways. Regrettably Musica Antiqua Köln do the music scant justice. Their customary vigour leads here to hurried tempi plus overemphatic phrasing and dynamics.
