Bach: Arias

The late Arleen Auger was one of the greatest strengths in Helmuth Rilling’s complete Bach Cantata survey, and her voice one of its most enduring delights. This affectionate tribute to her was first issued in 1999, but consists of arias drawn from Rillingseries which had been completed in 1985. Auger was at her peak when many of these recordings were made, and the recital is therefore indispensable to readers who find her lightly articulated singing and warmly communicative art as alluring as I do.

But Hänssler deserve censure for reissuing the disc with a woefully inadequate booklet containing nothing at all but the catalogue number of each cantata and the first line of its selected aria.
