This compilation features one of England's leading countertenors of the last 15 years singing mainstream Baroque repertoire. Disc 1 includes nine arias from Bach's church music (with John Eliot Gardiner), plus Handel, Schütz and Purcell; Disc 2 is a reissue of the 1997 CD (with Trevor Pinnock) on which Chance sang Vivaldi's Nisi Dominus, Stabat Mater and the Salve Regina RV 616. Chance's style retains the cool purity of the English chorister tradition so, while this collection offers some exceptionally fine singing, the lack of both sensuous tone and emotional ardour will not suit everyone.
