Brahms/Schumann: Liebeslieder-Walzer; Neue Liebeslieder-Walzer; Spanische Liebeslieder

Brahms wrote his Liebeslieder-Walzer while pining for Clara Schumann’s daughter Julie, but his disappointment is belied by the wit and lightness of touch of these two cycles of gorgeous Viennese-style waltzes. That wit is deliciously captured in this recording from last year’s Edinburgh Festival. The Hispanicisms of Schumann’s more varied Spanische Liebeslieder are communicated not least by the pianistic skills of Deutsch and Forsberg. William Humphreys-Jones
