Alwyn: Clarinet Sonata; Divertimento

Alwyn: Clarinet Sonata; Divertimento

Chandos continues its loyalty to William Alwyn’s music with this second volume of chamber pieces. They range from Crépuscule, a gently undulating piece for harp, to an Oboe Sonata rife with angular twists. His Clarinet Sonata explores the raucous, screeching nature of the instrument, without forgetting its expressive, singing qualities, and the Divertimento for solo flute juxtaposes haunting passages with frivolous fun. Excellent performances. Kate Sherriff
