Brahms/Reger

Initially in the Brahms the piano sounds boomy , the clarinet rather disembodied – such are the acoustics of All Saints, Petersham, where the recording was made. But the ear soon adjusts to this, and the performances really are very good. It was this Brahms sonata that inspired Reger to write for the same medium. His music here exudes a Brahmsian mellowness, though its chromaticism and constant modulation foreshadow the musical language of a later age. Wadham Sutton
