Bruckner: String Quintet in F; Rondo in C minor; Intermezzo in D minor

There are now several admirable versions of Bruckner’s Cinderella String Quintet in the catalogues, though this serviceable and excellently recorded version by Holland’s Raphael Quartet with violist Prunella Pacey shouldn’t be confused with the best of the bunch – Hyperion’s outstanding 1993 account from the similarly titled Raphael Ensemble. The British team ploughs a deeper furrow, sticking to it convincingly, and most eloquently of all in the Quintet’s deeply felt Adagio.

But if you require Bruckner’s entire output for strings on a single CD, go for Sony Vivarte’s period performances, also including Bruckner’s apprentice String Quartet in C minor (1862) from L’Archibudelli.
