Buxtehude: Seven Sonatas, Op. 2

This second volume of a series to include all of Buxtehude’s chamber music contains seven sonatas for violin, viola da gamba and continuo (harpsichord), published in Lübeck in 1696. They contain several short sections, often dance-oriented and recalling his contemporary Corelli. But similarity between the two ends there since Buxtehude’s style strikes the ear as more improvisatory and often more virtuosic, especially in the viola da gamba writing. Well worth exploring these excellent performances. Nicholas Anderson
