This collection of exquisite pieces for flute contains new transcriptions and some works that are seldom heard on disc. It is essentially French-heavy and sensual, but spiced with Villa-Lobos’s slightly austere Brazilian sounds. Karen Jones is a dramatic interpreter, but occasionally phrases are marred by pinched high notes. The bonus half-hour disc of easy-listening pieces juxtaposes transcriptions of gently Romantic melodies by Saint-Saëns with ostentatious big tunes, as in Borne’s Fantasy on Carmen. Kate Sherriff
