Dvorak/Suk/Smetana

Dvorak/Suk/Smetana

Both the trios were written soon after the death of a daughter. Smetana’s is the more complete expression of grief, but Dvorák’s Trio is full of distinctive melody and has a brilliant Scherzo. Performing with insight and affection, the players get the most from the emotionally less demanding Dvorák Trio. In the Smetana they could have gone a good deal further in the second and third movements. But with Suk’s Elegie as a bonus, this issue is certainly recommendable. Jan Smaczny
