Hindemith/Shostakovich

The upheavals of Europe in the Thirties drew typically different responses from Hindemith and Shostakovich. Hindemith’s 1938 Quartet is elegiac but upbeat. Shostakovich as ever is bleaker, grim gaiety vying with ponderous angst. The ensemble gives an excellent account of both. Christopher Wood
