Klein

Gideon Klein was a Moravian-Jewish pianist and composer who was killed by the Nazis in January 1945, when he was in his mid-20s. The music here, composed in the Terezín transit camp, shows him to have been a disciple of both Berg and his fellow Moravian, Janacék. The performers – Czech singers and Israeli instrumentalists – give dedicated accounts of these inventive works which only go to emphasise the tragedy of Klein’s premature death. Matthew Rye
