Koh, Kazuo & Kosaka Yamada, Sugawara, etc

In the West, Japanese music still means Takemitsu, but a small sample of what preceded him is provided here. The medium of flute and piano might be limiting, but nevertheless this makes for depressing listening – the works are a mixture of faded neo-classicism and wistful Debussian arabesques, with precious few sparks of originality at all.
