Pandolfi Mealli

Twelve violin sonatas, published in 1660 as his Opp. 3 and 4, are the only surviving works by GA Pandolfi Mealli. The seven on this CD suggest he was a composer of bold, mercurial brilliance. The sonatas are filled with haunting laments and dramatic climaxes and all the expressive extravagance of a master of the stile phantastico. The music thrills and charms by turns, and is played with exemplary brio by Andrew Manze. The disc also includes three unattributed harpsichord suites, but the inventive Pandolfi Mealli remains the disc’s real find. Graham Lock
