Parry: Piano Trio No. 2 in B minor; Piano Trio No. 3 in G

Parry’s popular reputation rests on ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’, ‘I was glad’ and, of course, ‘Jerusalem’. His piano trios, like most of his chamber music, remain unpublished, and it’s good to have them on disc. Peter Pirie’s barbed comment, that Parry ‘lacked Stanford’s occasional flicker of imagination’, is unjust to both of them. True, the trios are derivative, but they’re attractive and fastidiously crafted. The Deakin Trio play them well. Wadham Sutton
