Respighi/Ravel

Respighi and Ravel were masters of orchestration and this disc demonstrates the ability of each composer to manipulate instrumental colour within the relatively limited confines of the violin sonata. Respighi’s is expansive and impassioned, while Ravel1927 Sonata is notable for its economy and apparent simplicity. Paradoxically, the latter’s range of expression is far greater than that created by the rather overblown gestures of Ravel’s much earlier (posthumously published) Sonata. Splendid performances from Mordkovitch and Benson. Christopher Dingle
