Roussel: Piano Trio in E flat; Violin Sonata No. 1 in D minor; Divertissement

Roussel was a late starter, and the atmospheric Piano Trio (1902) was among his earliest compositions. The Divertissement for winds and piano, written four years later, has a wit and charm which anticipate the style later associated with Les Six, features which are well captured in this performance. The Sonata (1908, revised 1931) is a substantial work whose considerable vitality is eloquently served by Röling and Kantorow. Terry Barfoot
