Sainte-Colombe

The French composer Sainte-Colombe was hardly known by other than bass viol specialists until 1992 when Alain Corneau’s film Tous les matins du monde brought him wider fame. Sainte-Colombe was one of the outstanding bass viol virtuosi of the late 17th century and an idiomatically expressive composer for an instrument to which he is credited with having fitted a seventh string. He was also the teacher of Marin Marais, the greatest of all French bass violists. The music in this reissue is written for two unaccompanied bass viols and draws equally upon vocal and instrumental traditions.

Jordi Savall and Wieland Kuijken are evenly matched in tone and share a warm rapport with Sainte-Colombe’s subtly communicative inflections. Nicholas Anderson
