Vitali, Corelli, Vivaldi, Tartini, Pergolesi & Pasquali

Aaron Rosand is a grand-pupil of both Eugène Ysaÿe and Leopold Auer, two of the high priests of Romantic virtuoso violin playing. His repertoire includes concertos by Ernst, Joachim, Hubay and Godard, works snubbed by today’s star violinists, few if any of whom have recorded discs quite like this one. Aaron Rosand and Hugh Sung resurrect former mainstays of the recital room, like Vitali’s Chaconne, Corelli’s La folia and the infamous Devil’s Trill Sonata by Giuseppe Tartini.

Aaron Rosand and Hugh Sung resurrect former mainstays of the recital room, like Vitali’s Chaconne, Corelli’s La folia and the infamous Devil’s Trill Sonata by Giuseppe Tartini. Rosand’s performances are wonderfully alive and expressive; not for him the pallid, vibrato-less offerings of the authentic brigade. The suavity and grandeur of Rosand’s approach won’t suit everyone, of course, but his aristocratic playing is a joy, and the recorded sound is admirable. Recommended. Michael Jameson
