Zemlinsky: String Quartet No. 1; String Quartet No. 4; Two Movements for String Quartet

Zemlinsky’s early String Quartet (1896) has enormous lyrical appeal and an almost Dvorákian command of texture; though more austere, the musical language of the Fourth Quartet (1936) remains appealing. Performed with penetrating insight by the PrazŠák Quartet, this music can only enhance Zemlinsky’s still burgeoning reputation. Jan Smaczny
