Frohlocke Nun!

Frohlocke Nun!

A shift of city (to Berlin) and period (to Baroque and early Romantic) produces comparably exhilarating results. CPE Bach’s annunciation cantata Meine Seele erhebet den Herrn zips off like a bullet, the boys’ voices cutting through the textures like a clear-edged crystal.

Graun’s Kommt Christen, feiert dieses Fest is full of jubilant wind detail, and more stirring singing from the trebles of the Berlin Cathedral Choir, who are consistently outstanding. A plusher, more expansive palette takes over in intriguing snippets from Loewe’s oratorio Die Festzeiten and Mendelssohn’s Christus, rounding off another highly enjoyable disc of rarely heard music.
