This disc features some of Gesualdo’s choicest items. Exotic harmonic twists in ‘Io parto’ are beautifully presented, but in ‘Tirsi morir’ the long phrases become aimless and, in the churchy acoustic, many words are lost. Too much motet-style and not enough melodrama. Anthony Pryer
