Gibbons: Hosanna to the Son of David

Few of these anthems are new to disc, but this offering from Cambridge is more controlled in tone and tuning than the Clerkes of Oxenford’s recordings. The acoustic, however, is drier and harsher, and the choir sounds tired on some tracks. Among the pieces not previously recorded, ‘Deliver us’ and ‘O all true faithful hearts’ make most musical impact. ‘Praise the Lord’ produces the best performance. The booklet has all the texts and an oddly menacing photo of the choir. Anthony Pryer
