Carmen’s pride and Mélisande’s vulnerability found a sympathetic voice in Aberdeen-born Mary Garden. Adored by Debussy and worshipped in America during the inter-war years, Garden was an artist whose warmth, candour and innate sense of musical style compensated for a less than exceptional voice. Yet to hear her phrase Cadman’s At Dawning, or an aria from Alfano’s rarely heard Risurrezione – not to mention the Carmen Card Scene – is to learn and love the music afresh.
