Delius: On Hearing the First Cuckoo in Spring; Violin Concerto; Hassan (excerpts); La Calinda from Koanga; Piano Concerto; Caprice & Elegy; Légende

An informative note by Lyndon Jenkins introduces Albert Sammons’s thoughtful performance of the Violin Concerto recorded 25 years after he had given the work’s premiere. The Piano Concerto is played by Benno Moiseiwitsch under Constant Lambert, who also contributes Interludes from Hassan and Koanga with the Hallé (1942). Beatrice Harrison, another noted Delian, plays the late Caprice & Elegy with Delius’s amanuensis Eric Fenby conducting (1931). Rustling surfaces but generally bright sound. A valuable document.
