Tchaikovsky, Bruch

Two historic recordings of Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto are unlikely to set the pulses racing unless they offer something out of the ordinary. Fortunately French violinist Zino Francescatti, performing live with the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York in 1943 (although in distinctly variable sound), delivers the necessary magic, entrancing his audience with flawless pyrotechnics that incorporate some unauthorised but audacious scale passages of consecutive thirds in the first-movement cadenza.
