Arne, JC Bach, Byrd, Croft & Handel

This recording, made some 25 years ago, was one of Trevor Pinnock’s first solo recitals on disc. The programme is appealing and includes pieces by Byrd, William Croft, Handel, Arne and JC Bach, who settled in London in the early 1760s. Further delights are afforded by the instruments themselves, two of them 18th-century English harpsichords, the third a 16th-century Italian virginals which once belonged to Queen Elizabeth I. There are no disappointments here.

Pinnock’s playing is vital and stylish, his dazzling performance of Handel’s Harmonious Blacksmith variations perhaps providing a high point in his colourful, wide-ranging menu. An excellent reissue.
