Arnold: Complete Music for Solo Piano

Piano music is hardly what Malcolm Arnold is best known for, so this album is something of a surprise. Most are early works dating from the Thirties and Forties. All are instantly accessible and melodic; often dreamy, often ironic, sometimes shadowy and frequently contrasting the sublime with the ridiculous. Many are simple but appealing pieces for children; a lot of them exercises in technique. A delightful collection, with Benjamin Frith lucid and sparkling. Ian Lace
