Bach: Organ Works, Vol. 2: 6 Schübler Chorales, 18 Leipzig Chorales, BWV 645, 646, 647, 648, 649, 650, 651, 652, 653, 654, 655, 656, 657, 658, 659, 660, 661, 662, 663, 664, 665, 667, 668

The innumerable textures of Bach’s organ works on Lutheran melodies point to more than mere compositional fecundity. His ability to harness melodic and harmonic inventiveness in order to communicate theological understanding is demonstrated well in Koopman’s recordings of the ‘Schübler’ (transcriptions of cantata movements) and ‘Leipzig’ chorales. Context is given by the Amsterdam Baroque Choir singing selected chorale verses. Andrew McCrea
