Chopin: Nocturnes, Vol. 1

Ewa Kupiec’s first CD of the Nocturnes is recorded not in the order of the opus numbers but in chronological sequence. She plays Op. 9/2 straight, without any of Chopin’s variants or cadenzas, but she heeds the composer’s famous dictum that, in passages of rubato, the left hand should play in strict time. If anything, she slightly underplays the contrasts of mood and dynamics, but she’s one of the most stylish Chopin players I’ve come across in recent years.
