Geminiani, Hall, Handel, Purcell, etc

The Lady’s Banquet, published in volumes between 1704 and 1735, was a collection of popular songs, arias and dances, transcribed for keyboard and aimed at a predominantly female market for domestic performance. Chapman’s second dip into this material includes two Purcell aires and three sprightly pieces by Handel. Many of the CD’s 46 tracks are frustratingly brief, but a scattering of attractive tunes and Chapman’s vivacious playing (on spinet) do indeed ‘delight the ear’. Graham Lock
